Parent Guide for First-Time Hockey Families

Dear Cloquet Hockey Families,

Welcome to the Cloquet Hockey Association! Whether your child is lacing up skates for the first time or coming from another sport, we’re thrilled to have you join our hockey community. We know that getting started in hockey can be overwhelming, so we’ve created this guide to help answer your questions and make your first season smooth and fun!

šŸ”¹ Who Can Join Cloquet Hockey?

Cloquet Hockey is open to boys and girls starting as young as age 4. We offer programs from Learn to Skate (Intro to Hockey) all the way through high school levels. No experience is necessary to start—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!

(If you have a Cloquet address you will register through CAHA. If you live in Esko or Carlton you will sign up with your association that is based on your address)

šŸ”¹ What Equipment Does My Child Need?

Here’s a list of essential gear for beginner players:

  • Helmet with cage
  • Mouthguard
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey gloves
  • Hockey pants
  • Shin guards
  • Skates
  • Stick
  • Athletic supporter/cup
  • Hockey socks & jersey
  • Equipment bag
  • Base layers (optional but helpful for warmth and comfort)

Tip: Many new families borrow or buy used gear to start. We also host gear swaps and may have starter kits available!

šŸ”¹ What is the Time Commitment?

  • Learn to Skate/Intro to Hockey: Typically 1–2 sessions per week.
  • Mite/Youth Levels: Expect 2–4 ice times weekly, including practices and occasional games.
  • Games/Tournaments: Begin after players are comfortable on the ice. Travel is mostly local at younger ages.

We’ll provide a schedule at the beginning of the season and update regularly through our team app or email.

šŸ”¹ What Does It Cost?

Costs vary by age level and season, but typically include:

  • Registration fee
  • Ice time
  • Tournaments
  • Team fees (jersey, coaches, etc.)

Good news! Cloquet Hockey offers:

  • Payment plans
  • Scholarships and financial assistance
  • Equipment loaner programs (limited)

We’re committed to making hockey accessible for every family.

šŸ”¹ Do Parents Need to Volunteer?

Yes! Cloquet Hockey is a community-run organization, and we rely on parent volunteers to help with:

  • Running the clock and scoreboard
  • Working in the concession stand
  • Organizing team events
  • Fundraising
  • Coaching or managing

There’s a role for everyone, and volunteering helps us keep costs down and build a strong hockey community.

šŸ”¹ What if My Child Can’t Skate Yet?

No problem! That’s what Learn to Skate is for. Our coaches teach basic balance, stopping, turning, and confidence on the ice. Many kids start with no experience—progress comes quickly with practice and fun.

šŸ”¹ How Can I Support My Child?

  • Be positive. Encourage effort and sportsmanship.
  • Be patient. Skills take time to develop.
  • Stay involved. Attend practices and games when possible.
  • Ask questions. We’re here to help—no question is too small!

šŸ”¹ How Do We Communicate?

Each team uses the Crossbar app or email list for updates on schedules, games, and events. You’ll also receive information through the Cloquet Hockey Association website and newsletters.

šŸ”¹ Why Cloquet Hockey?

Cloquet has a proud tradition of hockey excellence, strong community values, and a fun, welcoming environment. We focus on skill development, teamwork, and building a lifelong love for the game.
